NEED TO KNOW INFO: Which Primary Do I Vote in? Democratic or Republican?
Even if you think of yourself as a Democrat, an Independent, or a Republican, the state of Mississippi doesn't identify voters with any party. You register simply as a voter. So you can CHOOSE which primary you want to vote in on August 4th.
When you go to your polling place on August 4, you'll ask for one of the two ballots shown below. Republicans can vote in the Democratic Primaries and vice versa.
However, whichever party you align yourself with on August 4th, you'll have to stick with that party through the run-offs (assuming there is a run-off election).
In the November General Elections, there is only one ballot, so no one has to pick sides. Voters are free to jump between party lines on the ballot and vote for whoever they think is the best candidate.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In eight different races, only Republicans are running, so these elections will actually be decided in the Primaries (or the run-offs). These races include Chancery Clerk, Constable Place 1, Constable Place 2, Coroner, Justice Court Judge Place 2, Superintendent, Supervisor District 2, and Supervisor District 3.
